Interview – Study in Korea

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

India

WHAT DO YOU DO IN KOREA?

I am doing my Master’s degree in Applied Statistics from Korea University. I also create content on Instagram as my hobby. The content revolves around my life in Korea, tips and tricks to survive in Korea, and scholarship applications.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN KOREA?

I got interested in Korea because of Kdramas initially but with time I am more drawn towards the opportunities it provides to foreign students. Ranging from scholarships to travel programs, international students have a lot of things to explore and experience here.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

I lived in Jeju for one year where I studied my language program. It was the most amazing time of my stay in Korea. Seas and Beaches, Mountains and Hills, Jeju has everything to offer. I didn’t chose it myself but I was allocated this place as a part of scholarship conditions and I was blessed to get Jeju. Now I live in Sejong, the smart city. Its calm and serene and offers perfect environment for a person whose goal is to achieve something in academia.

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

In Jeju, I would recommend Seogwipo and Aewol areas. You might need a car in Seogwipo as transportation is not very accessible but you will definitely love it! Aewol is a must go place in Jeju. It is known for beautiful sunsets! In Sejong I would recommend Gobuk Reservoir area! Hands downs it has the best cafes in Korea.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?

I like how safe Korea is! I am comfortable traveling even at midnight. I also like the convenience of life it has to offer. With convenience stores 24/7, good public transportation, cafes everywhere, your quality of life improves.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING IN KOREA?

The biggest challenge of course is language and food for me. It becomes difficult to find halal food and most of the products have meat to eat. But if you live in big cities like Seoul, Daejeon, and Busan, it will not be an issue.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN KOREA AND YOUR COUNTRY?

India is quite different from Korea in terms of cost of living and culture. Korea is way too expensive compared to India and also the culture here is still very homogeneous. India is a blend of multiple cultures, languages and religions. I find Korea to be homogeneous society but with more and more foreigners coming it might change in future.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS?

I definitely have seen a lot of changes in my life both professionally and personally. I have become more independent as I live alone. I realized what things are truly important in life. I am still figuring out my future here haha. I hope it turns out good!

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

I want to become a skilled Data Scientist! It doesn’t matter if I work in Korea or any other country but I want to have excellent data analysis skills!

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO KOREA.

To all my friends who are planning to come to Korea, I want you to know that Korea is still a country that has its own pros and cons! If you are coming solely because of your liking for Kdramas, please do thoughtful research before making a final decision. I would also recommend starting learning Korean and it will make your life easier.

HOW DO YOU LEARN KOREAN?

I learned Korean for 1 year at Jeju National University, dedicating all my time to it. Now I practice it by speaking to my friends in Korean and reading articles.
