Interview

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Pakistan

WHAT DO YOU DO IN KOREA?

Right now, I’m in Korea for my Master’s degree in Business Administration. I’m currently focused on completing a Korean language program to prepare for my studies.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN KOREA?

I am interested in Korea for several reasons. First and foremost, Korea is one of the safest countries in the world, which gives me peace of mind as an international student living far from home. The country’s efficient public transportation system and the friendliness of its people make daily life enjoyable and convenient. Korea is home to many top universities and offers a quality education at a relatively lower cost compared to USA & UK and many more. By learning the Korean language, I can tap into a broader range of opportunities both in my studies and in future career prospects.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO STAY IN THIS CITY?

I chose to stay in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, for several reasons. The city is full of life, with something exciting happening at any given time. There are countless cultural events, festivals, and activities to participate in, making it impossible to get bored. As the heart of Korea’s cultural, economic, and educational activities, Seoul provides an ideal environment for my academic pursuits and future career aspirations.

WHERE IS YOUR LOCAL RECOMMENDATION IN THIS CITY?

Seoul is a city full of vibrant and diverse experiences, and there are many places I would recommend to anyone visiting or living here.

To enjoy the scenery I would recommend to go to Namsan Seoul Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village.

For entertainment, you can go to Hongdae, Meyongdong, and Lotte Wolrd. Talking about the restaurants so I love Dhakalbi so I mostly go to Yoogane Dhakalbi.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST WHILE STAYING ABROAD?

While staying in Korea, I enjoy immersing myself in the vibrant culture and dynamic lifestyle that the country offers. Korea hosts a wide variety of unique festivals throughout the year, and I enjoy participating in them. Whether it’s the colorful Lantern Festival in Buddha’s Birthday or the Boryeong Mud Festival, these events offer a chance to experience Korean culture in fun and engaging ways. Korea’s advanced technology and innovation make everyday life convenient and exciting. From high-speed internet everywhere to cutting-edge tech in stores and cafes, Korea offers a glimpse into the future. Exploring Seoul’s night markets, such as Dongdaemun Night Market, is a thrilling experience. I enjoy trying diverse street foods, from tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) to hotteok (sweet pancakes), while soaking in the lively atmosphere.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE BEING IN KOREA?

Living in Korea has been an incredible experience, but it does come with its challenges. The biggest challenge for me has been adapting to the language barrier. While I am learning Korean through my language program, navigating daily life in a country where I am not yet fluent is difficult. Another challenge is adjusting to cultural differences. Korean culture has its unique social norms and etiquettes, such as the importance of hierarchy and respect in interactions. The cost of living, particularly housing in Seoul, is also a significant challenge.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN KOREA AND YOUR COUNTRY?

Comparing Korea and Pakistan has interesting contrasts in culture, lifestyle, and social norms. The most obvious difference is the language. Korean is the primary language in Korea, and while I am learning it, the communication styles are quite different from Urdu and English, which are widely used in Pakistan. The cuisines of Korea and Pakistan are distinct, with Korean food featuring dishes like kimchi, bibimbap, and bulgogi, which are often centered around rice and fermented ingredients.

In contrast, Pakistani cuisine is known for its rich and spicy flavors, with dishes such as biryani, nihari, and various kebabs. The work and education culture in Korea is known for its intensity and competitiveness. Long working hours and a strong emphasis on academic achievement are prevalent. While education is also highly valued in Pakistan, the pressure and societal expectations surrounding work and education are more pronounced in Korea. These comparisons highlight the unique characteristics and shared values of both Korea and Pakistan.

DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS?

Living in Korea has brought significant changes to my life and has positively influenced my future prospects. Experiencing a new culture firsthand has broadened my perspective and enhanced my cultural awareness. Studying Korean has improved my language skills and opened up new opportunities for communication. Living in Korea has allowed me to build a diverse network of friends, colleagues, and mentors from around the world. Living independently in a foreign country has boosted my confidence and self-reliance. Navigating daily life challenges, such as language barriers and cultural differences, has made me more resilient and resourceful. Overall, my time in Korea has been very transformative.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?

My dream is to become a successful entrepreneur and influencer, using my platform to connect with people worldwide and share meaningful content. I envision building a business that not only thrives financially but also contributes positively to society, possibly in the fields of technology, digital media, or travel. Traveling is a significant part of my dream. I want to explore different countries, experience diverse cultures, and gain new perspectives. my dream is to lead a fulfilling life where I am constantly learning, growing, and making a positive impact on the world around me. I want to create opportunities for myself and others, enjoy the journey, and leave a legacy that reflects my values and aspirations.

MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO WILL GO TO KOREA.

Korea is a country that welcomes visitors with open arms and offers countless opportunities to explore, learn, and enjoy. Here are some few tips that i want to share with all of you.

  1. While many people speak English, learning a few basic Korean phrases can enhance your experience.
  2. Renting a hanbok and exploring palaces or traditional villages is a popular activity that offers great photo opportunities.
  3. Download apps like Naver Maps or KakaoMap for navigation, as Google Maps is not as effective in Korea. Papago is a great translation app for Korean.
HOW DO YOU LEARN KOREAN?

Currently, I am enrolled in a Korean language program as part of my studies here in Korea. Living in Korea has given me the advantage of immersion. I actively use Korean in my daily interactions, whether it’s ordering food at restaurants, navigating public transportation, or engaging in conversations with locals. To practice speaking, I participate in language exchange sessions. I connect with native Korean speakers and fellow learners to practice conversation.
